30-Jun-2010 – Basel: Cervélo TestTeam’s Heinrich Haussler, who has been plagued by knee problems, underwent a successful operation in the CrossKlinik in Basel (SUI) on Tuesday.
“Heinrich feels well after the successful surgery yesterday,” commented Andreas Goesele, Chief Medical of the Cervélo TestTeam. It was a necessary operation, and Heinrich is now focused on full recovery.
“I am happy that I had this surgery,” stated Haussler. “I will now start my rehabilitation process and take my time to get fully recovered. I’m sure it will be hard for me to watch the Tour de France on TV now, as it was one of my main goals this season. As I have already stressed, my health is the first priority and I would like to come back to cycling healthy and in good shape. When that comeback will be, I do not know yet, it depends on my recovery process. But now I wish my colleagues from Cervélo TestTeam all the best for the Tour de France 2010!”

ROTTERDAM, Netherlands, June 30, 2010 – Tour de France chief Christian Prudhomme believes the quality of challenger to reigning champion Alberto Contador will make for the most openly competitive race in years.
The 97th edition of the world’s toughest bike race begins with a prologue here on Saturday and, if predictions hold true, will end in Paris on July 25 with Spaniard Contador having defended his yellow jersey.
In between, however, there are stages where tough wind conditions (stage one) and the cobblestones of stage three make the race treacherous, well before the peloton arrives in the Pyrenees mountains for a third week of thrilling and decisive racing.
On paper the hilly profile of the race looks tailor-made for Contador, the talented climber who won in both 2007 and 2009.
But with the presence of seven-time winner Lance Armstrong for the last time, and three or four other potential challengers in Andy Schleck, Cadel Evans, Ivan Basso and Bradley Wiggins, Prudhomme believes the Spaniard won’t have it so easy.
“Alberto Contador’s the favourite obviously, but there’s a lot of potential winners spread out among the rival teams,” Prudhomme told Bicycle.net.
“Last winter, and for the first time in cycling, there was a transfer period akin to the one in football.
“There’s Contador, Armstrong, the Schleck brothers (Andy and Frank), Evans, a strong Liquigas team supporting Basso, Wiggins with a new Sky team — guys who are spread out in different teams which, I hope, leads to different attacking strategies.
“The race profile has been done so that, from stage one, things can be shook up.”
Contador, the winner in 2007 and 2009, is considered the best climber in the business — and is none too shabby in stage racing’s other key cycling discipline of the time trial.
This year there are a total of six high mountain stages including three summit finishes, one long time trial and no team time trial.
Contador could have an early mountain to climb barely a few days in: stage three’s 213km ride from Wanze in Belgium to Arenberg, where the inclusion of seven cobble stoned sections have given his rivals some ideas.
The threat of losing time due to punctures or crashes is so serious that several key contenders, including Contador, have ridden the stage in northern France to gauge what will be required on the day.
If he gets past those obstacles, Contador is expected to sit and wait for his rivals to attack in the two mountain stages in the Alps, in order to keep his powder dry for the Pyrenees.
In the event the race is still undecided, a pancake-flat time trial over 52km from Bordeaux to Pauillac will have the final say.
Contador finished with a plus four-minute lead on Luxemburger Andy Schleck last year, with Armstrong pipping Wiggins to an unlikely third place to finish on the podium.
Australia’s Evans is a former two-time runner-up, once to Contador and once to his fellow Spaniard Carlos Sastre, while Basso, the reigning Giro d’Italia champion, returns to the race for the first time since his expulsion in 2006 for his suspected implication in the Operation Puerto doping affair.

PARIS, April 27, 2010 – Swiss rider Thomas Frei has been handed a two-year ban after testing positive for the banned EPO in March, the Swiss Olympic committee announced on Wednesday.
The 25-year-old, who tested positive in an out of competition test on March 21, admitted two previous offences.
Following the announcement of his positive test, Frei was withdrawn from the Tour of Trentino and sacked by his team BMC.
Apart from his suspension, the start of which has been backdated to April 22, Frei was also fined 1500 Swiss francs (1130 euros) and ordered to pay 4440 Swiss francs in costs.
Frei was Swiss junior champion in 2002, spent two years with Astana before joining BMC in 2009.

Posted: June 30th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Bicycles | No Comments »On Saturday 3rd of July, the 97th edition of the Tour de France kicks off with an 8.9 kilometer long prologue in the streets of Rotterdam, Holland.
But the first minor time trial will probably not be decisive for the outcome of the GC when the race ends in Paris, Sunday 25th of July. Before then, the 198 riders divided into 22 professional cycling teams will have been through six mountain stages of which three has uphill finishes and a long time trial over 52 kilometers. Most legendary are the climbs to Col de Tourmalet and Col de Madeleine where the top favorites will definitely seek for weaknesses in the front group.
In addition, the sprinters will have a fair chance of putting their mark on the race which contains nine stages in rather flat terrain and four stages where lucky escapees have more than a good chance of making it to the finish line.
The 20 stages have a total length of 3642 kilometers and when the last rider has crossed the finish line on the Champs-Élysées, the top of the pop will probably be separated by only a few minutes in the overall standings.
As perhaps the most spectacular event in this year’s Tour of France, the field of riders will have their spring classic talents tested on no less than seven severe cobblestone sections as we know them from Paris-Roubaix where Team Saxo Bank’s Fabian Cancellara’s toughest competitor this year was his own shadow. The Swiss time trial specialist will be playing a key role on this stage where he will try to pull the Schleck brothers through 13 kilometers of bone-breaking cobblestone sections where the whole race can be lost. Crashes are inevitable.
Team Saxo Bank has a vision with their nine riders: Andy Schleck, Fränk Schleck, Chris Anker Sørensen, Nicki Sørensen, Jens Voigt, Stuart O’Grady, Fabian Cancellara and debutants Jakob Fuglsang and Matti Breschel. Andy Schleck who won the national time trial championship in Luxembourg is the man to serve and protect. Around him, he has a very strong team of experienced and powerful bodyguards who will stand by him on both flat road and in the mountains.
“There are some risky elements in the Netherlands and Belgium considering both cobblestone sections and harsh crosswinds where we must be careful not to lose ground. However, it appears that the route is harder than last year’s Tour and I have a better chance of winning time in the mountains and lose less time on the long time trial. I’m going for the overall victory this year but it’s clear that Contador is the biggest favorite while Lance (Armstrong) may be more motivated than ever,” said Team Saxo Bank’s Andy Schleck earlier.
“Overall, I think that this year’s course is very interesting. I am happy to see that the mountain stages seem harder and the mountains are positioned later on each stage so they can be used for attacks. Obviously, I would like to have had a team time trial but it speaks to our favor that there is only one long time trial. Last but not least, we must be very careful and aware on stage three passing the cobblestones,” concludes Team Saxo Bank team owner Bjarne Riis.

HTC-Columbia welcomes Skype as an ongoing supporter that fits extremely well with it’s young, international team.
Team HTC-Columbia has used Skype for more than three years to keep in contact with colleagues around the world and to stay close to friends and family back home. With the professional cycling season lasting more than 10 months, the team relies on free Skype-to-Skype video and voice calls to do things together with their friends and family when they are apart, and to stay in touch making low-cost calls to phones internationally. The team has been able to save money on business calls by using Skype’s business solutions and have now been set-up on the new Skype Manager with the latest Skype Subscriptions and hardware accessories – enabling each member of the team to make the most of Skype.
Look out for Skype’s logo on the new team jersey which will be unveiled in Rotterdam, The Netherlands on July 2. Moreover, the team will be available during the Tour for interviews with the world’s press via Skype video. Journalists will be able to contact the team and organize time to talk to team members real-time over Skype video.
“Whether it’s to connect during those unmissable moments, or just to have a quick catch-up over IM with their colleagues, Team HTC-Columbia is a natural fit for Skype as they have been using Skype extensively for personal and business communications from different countries worldwide for quite some time now,” said Neil Stevens, General Manager of Skype’s Consumer Business Unit. “One of their new riders, Hayden Roulston has watched his baby crawl, stand and take his first steps over Skype video. That’s the beauty of Skype; it allows people to do the things they normally do together even when they are thousands of miles apart.”
“Skype offers innovative communication products and has ambitious marketing objectives,” said Bob Stapleton, head of High Road Sports. “Our team hails from 20 different countries worldwide, so taking the decision for us to join the millions of people and businesses around the world that use Skype was simple. Skype keeps the whole team communicating and emotionally connected as we traverse the globe competing in the world’s top races such as the Tour de France,” Stapleton added.
